What the published minimum does not tell you
Of the 49 German universities in our sheet, the overwhelming majority publish the same nominal minimum of German grade 2.5. The number is effectively constant across the country, which makes it useless for choosing where to apply. What varies is the actual competitiveness, and that only shows in outcomes.

Choosing between them
- Language of instruction. Many engineering master's programmes are taught in German. English-taught options exist at every TU9 university but are fewer, and they are more competitive as a result.
- Coursework match. German engineering programmes check your bachelor's credits against their curriculum. A mechanical engineer applying to an automotive programme needs the underlying modules on the transcript.
- APS. Mandatory for Indian applicants at most of these universities and slow to process.
- Specialisation over ranking. TU Freiberg for mining and resources, Stuttgart and Aachen for automotive and mechanical, Darmstadt and Saarland for CS-adjacent engineering. Match the department, not the QS number.
