MS in Computer Science in Germany: What Applicants Actually Get In With
Computer science is the most competitive master's field in Germany for Indian applicants, and the published entry minimum tells you almost nothing about your real chances. Most universities list a minimum of around German grade 2.5, roughly CGPA 7.0. The applicants who actually receive offers are well above it.
We looked at 146 computer science and data-related master's applications from Indian students to German universities, each with its outcome.
The gap between eligible and competitive
The median admitted CS applicant sat at CGPA 8.55. The median rejected applicant was 8.26 — still comfortably above the published minimum of about 7.0. For computer science, clearing the official floor is assumed, not an advantage.
This is the single most useful thing in the data. If you are at 7.0 and applying to CS programmes at ranked technical universities, you are not a borderline candidate, you are below the field. That does not mean do not apply; it means your list needs targets that match, and your motivation letter and project work have to carry more weight.
What admitted CS applicants look like by university
| University | Admits | Rejects | Admitted median CGPA | Rejected median CGPA |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Technical University of Munich | 26 | 17 | 8.93 | 8.3 |
| Hamburg University of Technology | 18 | 21 | 8.66 | 8.11 |
| RWTH Aachen University | 14 | 12 | 8.77 | 8.34 |
| University of Stuttgart | 13 | 9 | 9.28 | 8.6 |
| Saarland University | 7 | 6 | 8.36 | 7.69 |
| University of Bonn | 6 | 4 | 8.68 | — |
Sample sizes are small per university, so read these as an indication of the band rather than a cutoff. The pattern across all of them is consistent: the real bar sits between 8.3 and 9.3, not at 7.0.
What else CS programmes check
- Coursework matching. German CS programmes check whether your bachelor's contains enough credits in relevant subjects. This is often a hard filter, applied before anyone reads your motivation letter.
- Three-year bachelor's degrees. Indian three-year degrees can require curricular analysis at some universities. Technical universities are generally stricter here than others.
- APS certificate. Required for Indian applicants at most institutions and slow to obtain, so start early.
- GRE. Generally not required for German CS programmes, though a strong score can help a borderline file.
Saarland, TU Darmstadt, KIT, RWTH Aachen and TU Munich are the names that come up most for CS strength. For the full list with published minimums, see the MS in Germany entry requirements table.
About these numbers. University minimums and IELTS bands come from each institution's published admissions pages and are general master's minimums; individual programmes are often stricter, so verify per programme. Admitted and rejected CGPA figures come from self-reported applicant outcomes, not from the universities, and describe this group of applicants rather than official acceptance rates.
Where does your profile actually sit? The free university fit checker reads your profile and shows where you stand against the programmes you are targeting, so you can build a list with reaches, targets and safe options.

FAQ
What CGPA do I need for MS in Computer Science in Germany?
The published minimum at most universities is around German grade 2.5, roughly CGPA 7.0. In our data the median admitted CS applicant had a CGPA of 8.55, and the median rejected applicant had 8.26. Treat 7.0 as eligibility, not a competitive score.
Is a 7.0 CGPA enough for MS CS at TU Munich or RWTH Aachen?
It clears the published minimum but sits well below the field. Admitted applicants to TU Munich in our data had a median CGPA of 8.93 and to RWTH Aachen 8.76. At those universities a 7.0 is a long shot for computer science.
Do I need the GRE for MS in Computer Science in Germany?
For most German universities, no. A few programmes ask for it and a strong score can help a borderline application, but it is not a standard requirement the way it is in the US.
Will my three-year Indian bachelor's degree be accepted?
It depends on the university. Some accept three-year degrees directly, others require curricular analysis or additional credits, and technical universities tend to be stricter. Check the specific programme before applying.
Which German universities are strongest for computer science?
Saarland University, TU Darmstadt, KIT, RWTH Aachen and TU Munich are the names that come up most consistently for CS. Several are TU9 members, and all appear in our entry requirements table.
