The German student visa is document-driven rather than interview-driven. Applications fail on missing or mistimed paperwork far more often than on the strength of the candidate. Two items cause most of the trouble: the blocked account and the APS certificate.
Proof of finances: the blocked account
For 2026 the required blocked account (Sperrkonto) amount is €11,904 for the year, which is €992 per month. You deposit the full year up front and the account releases the monthly amount once you are in Germany. The figure is set in line with the German BAföG rate and is reviewed periodically, so confirm it before you transfer.
If you are applying for the Opportunity Card or a job-seeker visa rather than a student visa, the amount is higher, around €13,092 per year or €1,091 per month.
Alternatives the embassy may accept include a scholarship covering at least the monthly amount, a declaration of commitment from a sponsor resident in Germany, or a bank guarantee. Most applicants use a blocked account because it is the most predictable route.
APS certificate
Indian applicants generally need APS verification of their academic documents. Of the 49 German universities in our sheet, 9 explicitly flag APS as mandatory in their admissions guidance. It must be obtained before you apply, not after, and it takes weeks — this is the most common cause of a missed intake among Indian applicants.

Book the appointment as early as the mission allows rather than waiting until every other document is finished.
