What this means in practice
IELTS 6.5 overall is the working answer for English-taught master's programmes at most German universities. A small number set 7.0, and a few accept 6.0. Because the requirement barely varies, your IELTS score is rarely what differentiates your application — it is a gate you pass, not a lever you pull.
That is worth knowing because applicants often retake IELTS to push 7.0 to 7.5 when the same effort spent on the motivation letter or on programme fit would do far more. In our data the median admitted applicant had a CGPA of 8.52 while the median rejected applicant was 8.2, and both groups had cleared the same English requirement.
Band requirements and the sub-score trap
- Overall versus sub-scores. Many programmes require a minimum in each section as well as overall. An overall 6.5 with a 5.5 in writing can fail a requirement that a 6.5 overall appears to meet.
- TOEFL equivalents. Universities that list IELTS 6.5 typically accept TOEFL iBT around 90, and those at 7.0 around 95. Check the specific figure rather than converting yourself.
- German-taught programmes. IELTS is irrelevant for these. They require TestDaF or a C1 certificate instead, which is a much bigger time commitment and worth deciding on early.
- Validity. IELTS scores expire after two years. Time the test so it is still valid at the point of visa application, not just at application.
